The goal of this project was to marry access and outdoor amenities with food production and water harvesting. Water infrastructure is core to the design principles that informed this landscape, as it is uniquely situated at the confluence of two creeks and provides habitat to a unique species of freshwater shrimp. In the spirit of stewardship, the property owners wanted to ensure that by the time rainwater reached the on-site creek, that the water would be free of silt and sediment. Permaculture Artisans employed swales, rain-gardens, bio-filters and other earthworks to achieve this goal. The design of the water system provides a functional and aesthetically pleasing addition to the landscape while also attracting all sorts of beneficial critters.
